Mum’s not the greatest cook but I can see that she’s preparing this for ages – taking way longer than when she makes anything for her and Dad. She’s really studying the cookbook, making sure she gets it all exactly right. She’s even putting some into this little ice tray, making sure she saves it for later.
So I’m there thinking, what is it?It’s going to be just fabulous.
And then it arrives on my plate – mashed broccoli.
I mean, she actually followed a recipe for that.
‘Delicious,’ she tells me as the spoon angles itself into my mouth. ‘We love green vegetables.’
And I’m there thinking, ‘Do we? Because I didn’t notice any in that chocolate fondant you had earlier.’
